Located in a historical building in the heart Florence, Leonardo's incredible machines are only a short walk from the main Cathedral “il Duomo”. In 2004 it settled in Via Cavour, then moved to its new headquarters for a year. The interactive machines on display are working models which have been hand-crafted from Leonardo's original sketches. This craft has formed a rich part of the Tuscan artisan tradition since the 1960's.

Our iconic Florentine museum has a truly international scope (guide books and labels can be found in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese!) and offers educational tours and services for families, schools groups and the general public. The educational workshop "W Leonardo!" is dedicated to understanding physics and mechanics in a fun and easy to understand way.

The story of the Niccolai family began long ago. Around the year 1960, it was Carlo who courageously decided to transform his workshop of objects for Italian high fashion accessories into a bona fide smithy, where manual expertise produced Leonardo’s machines with the highest standards of craftsmanship. Partly out of passion, partly out of the wish to live a new adventure, Carlo began—one model after another-to form a genuine collection of functioning machines, based on Leonardo da Vinci’s designs.
